Text-to-speech has been almost good for a decade — clear enough to understand, wrong enough to be tiring. ElevenLabs is the first tool where a listener stops noticing. We generated around two hours of narration across an explainer series, a set of product videos and one audiobook chapter to find where the illusion breaks.
Short-form narration, 30 to 90 seconds, read in a neutral informative tone. In a blind test with eight people, most could not reliably identify the AI read against a human one. Breath sounds, small hesitations and sentence-level intonation are all convincing.
Multilingual output is the other standout: the same voice speaking Spanish or French, still recognisably the same person, is a genuinely new capability for small production teams.
Length. Over ten minutes, the lack of a performer's arc becomes noticeable — every paragraph is delivered with the same energy. Fixing that means splitting the script and adjusting style settings per section, which is real work.
